There is no where for her to go. Abusive agency. Abusive employers. Negligent state. Negligent embassy.

THE STORY

Adegoriola Motunrayo Adetutu arrived in Lebanon on 16 July, 2019. She is 26 and from Nigeria. Her agent is Bilal Raya, Soft Power, located in Tamnine El Tahta near Rayak Airbase in the Beqaa Valley. She came to Lebanon to try to earn a living. Little did she know that she would end up stuck here, almost a year later, not having been paid any of her salary, and unable to leave.

Motunrayo stayed for two weeks with her first employer; Raya then removed her and took her back to the agency. She doesn’t know why he removed her, nor why she wasn’t paid. The only information she has about her second employer is that her name is Linda, and she owns a supermarket. Motunrayo worked in the supermarket and in Linda’s house for a month. Raya also removed her from that employer, and again she was not paid.

Her third employer was Mohammad Abdallah and his wife, Hanaa, who live in Akkar. Motunrayo began working for them on 1 November, 2019. She contacted This Is Lebanon in February 2020, seeking help as she had received no payment since arriving in Lebanon seven months before. She said that when she asked the Abdallahs for her salary she was told: “There are no dollars in Lebanon.” On 15 March, 2020, she contacted us again to say she had received her salary. When we asked her how much, she sent a photo - it was 5,000 Lebanese Lira (about $2). Her employers had tried to trick her into thinking she had been paid.

On 26 March, Motunrayo returned to Soft Power, the employment agency. She wrote:

“Mohammad wanted to have sex with me and I told him no. When I am sleeping he come to my room and he wake me up. He tell me to do it and I told him that I can’t do that. I told them to take me back to the office.”

Unfortunately, sexual harassment is one of the most common complaints from domestic workers towards their employers.

Motunrayo claimed that Hana had not wanted to return her to the office because she had paid for her. She alleges that she kept her without food for two days. Her allegations are confirmed by a screenshot conversation between Motunrayo's brother and Hana. Using Google Translate, the brother requested that Hana take his sister to the office because she was not safe in the house, even under Hana’s protection. Haaa replied: “Don’t worry. We will save her. I will bring her wherever I go. And I fight with my husband now to not do this things. And he say nothing serious with her.” Hana knew about the abuse but chose to ignore it in order to protect her investment.

This Is Lebanon contacted Mohammad Abdallah in an attempt to get Motunrayo her unpaid salary. We are used to a wide variety of excuses from employers as to why they haven’t paid, but Mohammad’s is the most creative to date.

He said that she had a contraceptive device which she wanted removed, and she had refused his offer to take her to a clinic, preferring instead to return to Nigeria to have it removed. Motunrayo has no such device and had specifically told us that she did not want to return to Nigeria; she needed to stay and earn money.

He acknowledged that she hadn’t been paid at all, but said that the problem was now the agent’s. He said that Soft Power owed him $2000. This is a common experience of domestic workers who are returned to the agency. The employer and the agent both say the other party is responsible for the salary; the domestic worker has no recourse to justice and goes unpaid.

This is Lebanon also contacted Mohammad's wife, Hana. She denied even writing the messages to Motunrayo’s brother although the screenshots clearly show she did.

On 7 May, having sat for six weeks in the agent’s house with many other girls, and hungry from lack of food, Motunrayo decided to get out. Fellow Nigerians organised a taxi for her to go to Beirut. On the way, she contacted This Is Lebanon who in turn contacted Mr. Yusuf, the Senior Counsellor at the Nigerian embassy. He was informed of Motunrayo’s imminent arrival and said they could take her information but could not provide her with a shelter. He said there are about 100,000 Nigerians in Lebanon and they do not have the finances to provide shelter for all the abused women. When Motunrayo arrived at the embassy, she was turned away. She says that the staff told her: “Who told you to come to Lebanon? We have no place for you to stay and no food for you to eat. Go wherever you want.”

The taxi driver then took Motunrayo to General Security, the Lebanese intelligence agency that also handles immigration matters. General Security sent her to the police. By this stage her taxi had left. The police gave her 10,000 Lebanese Lira for another taxi and told her to go back to the Nigerian embassy. No assistance was rendered and she was left crying on the street.

A Lebanese passerby saw Motunrayo, and took her to an empty house where she would at least have a roof over her head. Ethiopian neighbours have taken pity on her and shared some of their meagre food supplies.

Motunrayo says: “I was told good things about Lebanon, but all I have found is suffering in this country.”

Who will help her? Will she ever receive her salary? How will she get home?
